It’s easy to run away from the pain. It’s terribly hard to walk towards it.

There is a place in my mind, in my soul, that was the outline of a little boy. A little boy that was just waiting to be colored in. Now he’ll never be colored in. What was supposed to be the outline of a beautiful picture, is now the chalk outline of a dead boy.

Patience, Alcohol, and Charleston, South Carolina

The last time I was in Charleston, S.C. I was 16 and coming to interview at The Citadel. Dressed to the nines and ready to impress, I walked up to the Admissions Office and seeing a woman at a desk politely said, "I'm Joshua Lawton. I'm here for an interview." After looking through her calendar she said, "No you're not, because your interview was yesterday."
