Much of the conversation that plagues the media and veterans group is either black or white. Either veterans and servicemembers are living in a wonderland of benefits and pay, or veterans and servicemembers are eking out a living from the scraps of the federal government’s largesse.
There is one emotion, one driving thought that gets you through the endless patrols, the never ending political bullshit, and the trauma: I need to do whatever I can to make sure that those to the left and right of me come home. For those doing the fighting, war isn't about taking countries, it's about taking hills. War is personal. War is hell. War is a family affair.
This sense of entitlement and total lack of personal responsibility for their lofty position within society is disgusting to me, and serves as fuel for my Heinleinian view of military service and citizenship in general:
